How it works

We find the films. You choose. We bring them to the screen.

The club doesn't make films or crowdfund them. Membership pays for buying the rights to films that are already finished, and for releasing them well.

01 · FIND

Scouting at festivals and markets

We watch what's screening at festivals and talk to sales agents about documentaries whose rights are open for Singapore and Southeast Asia.

02 · CHOOSE

Members pick from a shortlist

Each round, members get a short brief on every film on the shortlist and vote by a set date. The committee signs the deal.

03 · RELEASE

Screenings and streaming

Premieres in Singapore, streaming for members, and subtitles for audiences across the region. Filmmakers share in each release.

Membership

One yearly membership. A real say in what we show.

Membership is a yearly subscription to the club: films to watch, a vote on what we buy next, and tickets to premieres.

The shortlist

Members choose the next film

Every film the club buys goes through the same four steps. The first shortlist opens to waitlist members.

  1. STEP 1

    Shortlist

The committee picks three to five finished films with rights available.

  2. STEP 2

    Brief

Members get a one-page brief and a trailer for each film.

  3. STEP 3

    Vote

Voting closes on a set date. If turnout is low, a published default applies.

  4. STEP 4

    Result

We share the result, what we agreed to pay, and the release plan.

Where membership money goes

Membership fees pay for running the club and for the film budget. Money the films earn goes back into the film budget to buy more films.

  • Members get a monthly report on what the club did and what it cost.
  • Spending has set limits.
  • Votes close on a set date.
  • You'll always know when you're talking to the AI.

Our story

Eighteen years early

The first Movies Club let members choose and release documentaries together. What held it back was the cost of running votes, accounts and member contact. Today an AI does that day-to-day work, and people make the decisions: deals, spending and votes.

Filmmakers and sales agents

Have a finished film?

We're looking for finished documentaries with rights available for Singapore and Southeast Asia. Tell us about yours.

  • Every enquiry is read by the committee.
  • Nothing appears on the site or goes to members unless the committee approves it and you agree.
  • We reply within two weeks.
Private. This goes only to the club's committee.

Questions

Good to know

Is membership an investment?

No. Membership is a yearly subscription. It doesn't make you an owner or shareholder of the club or its films, and it gives no right to profits or any financial return.

Do members own the films?

No. Members choose and back the films the club buys, but the club holds the rights. Money the films earn goes back into the film budget for the next film.

What kind of films?

Finished documentaries, including new forms of documentary, with rights available for Singapore and Southeast Asia. We don't fund production.

Who runs the club?

The Movies Club is being set up by THEMOVIESCLUB PTE. LTD. in Singapore. The club's committee signs deals and approves spending. An AI does much of the day-to-day work.
