Looking for solutions to the London Riots. The Interrupters was one of the most talked about movies in 2011, and shows how in Chicago some people are finding innovative and brave solutions to gang violence.

Shot over the course of one year, The Interrupters are: Ameena, Cobe and Eddie, all
who have stories and histories of violence and gang activity. These “violence
interrupters” (their job title) use their own personal experiences and street
credibility to work in the communities, interjecting where violence is prone to
erupting and working with families to stop the infection and spread. Their work
and their insights are informed by their own journeys, which, as each of them
point out, defy characterisation.

Operations are due to begin this week at Sony’s new distribution centre in Hertfordshite to fill the void left by the fire in Enfield earlier this month.

The new “logistics centre” is designed to continue the supply of CDs DVDs and Blu Ray discs to supermarkets and HMV stores, wholesalers and overseas after Sony’s massive warehouse in Enfield was destroyed by arsonists earlier this month.

The resumption of business offers a lifeline to about 150 beleaguered independent labels who faced crippling losses as their stock went up in smoke.

Latest estimates of the number of discs lost in the blaze have been moved up to the 3 million mark.

The Indie Film Labels, although from different backgrounds and goals in life, have discovered a united spirit, since the riots on August 8th, and the destruction of the Sony warehouse in Enfield, containing more than 1.5million CDs, records and DVDs.

The blaze affected around 200 indie labels, from Axiom and Dogwoof, to Second Run DVD and Warp Films. It hasn’t killed the Labels off, but the impact on Cashflow is causing interesting times for many.

Ironically, at this time, Digital which was seen as a threat via Piracy and the like, is now Customers are now buying downloads, when no DVDs are available. As many titles are not available digitally then this does not help all titles, but is a good option for most labels via iTunes and the likes.

Currently the Labels are busy replicating catalogue titles and getting these restocked as quick as possible. If there’s a demand for a title, Labels will respond. One side effect wil be that where the long tail titles have little or no demand then these titles are likely to be deleted. Sad to see.

It has been great to see the spirit and determination shown by the Indie Labels these past few weeks. The Other cinema is now talking to Label owners, in order to see if there are some positive ways we can encourage the public to further help the Labels affected, such as offering a wider range or downloads, or setting up events etc. Watch this space.

Sony London fire cost $49.5 million

Arson attack destroyed up to 30 mil discs
By Diana Lodderhose – Source: Variety

The cost of property destroyed in an arson attack at Sony Digital Audio Disc Corp.’s London distribution center are in excess of £30 million ($49.5 million), according to initial estimates, says SDADC, which resumed business on Monday.

The Aug. 8 fire, sparked during riots in the city, consumed up to 30 million discs from independent film and music companies.

“Within an hour after the incident, Sony DADC’s Disaster Recovery Plan was in place and enabled a crisis team to start action,” said Darren Houghton, managing director of U.K. distribution. He said not a single order or electronic data interchange had been lost and all IT systems and services were up and running. The crisis team found alternative warehousing at two sites. All Sony DADC permanent staff will move to one of these sites.

As reported in Daily Variety on Aug. 22, Sony will manage business out of a warehouse in Hertfordshire, just 10 miles from the original center.

Some 80% of volume will be distributed from this hub, which was operational from Monday.

A second facility in Buckinghamshire, approximately 40 miles from the Enfield location, will temporarily operate the other 20% of the work services for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

“The level of support we have received from our customers, Sony affiliate companies, local distribution centers and other companies from within the industry has been remarkable,” said Houghton. “Without it, such a fast reaction to market demands would not have been achieved.”

Another Label affected by the Enfield fire. Please show some love and visit their website

http://www.secondrundvd.com/

Second Run are a UK-based DVD company specialising in the release of important and award-winning films from all around the world.

Second Run films encompass many genres and languages; what distinguishes them is their quality and their ethos. They are niche-market films which we hope anyone who seriously cares about cinema would want in their collection – but which, crucially, have never before been available anywhere in the world on DVD; and now are, additionally, being presented with newly-translated English subtitles.

Each Second Run film is our personal selection reflecting significant films which we have seen and love and care about, and which we believe should be seen by others for their quality and importance. Our purpose is to encourage that by making these films now available to you and at a reasonable price.

Every Second Run release is re-mastered to the best possible sound and picture quality, under the supervision and guidance of the film’s Director whenever possible, and will also incorporate a range of original extras wherever possible. Our films will always appear only in their original aspect ratio and in their original language version with on/off English subtitles.
